Maintaining status/enrollment

Online and Distance Learning Classes Regulation

U.S. Immigration Regulations require that only ONE online or distance learning class per semester can be used to count toward the minimum number of credits needed for full-time enrollment as an F-1 student.

  • Full-time enrollment minimum requirement:
    Undergraduates:
    12 credits

    Masters:
    9 credits
    6 credits with assistantship

    Doctoral:
    6 credits
    3 credits with assistantship

  • Acceptable Online class enrollment examples:

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

    3 credit online class

    3 credit online class

    12 credits total = Okay

    3 credit online class

     

    15 credits total = Okay

  • Unacceptable Online class enrollment examples:

    3 credit regular/hybrid class

  • The MSU Office of the Registrar has identified MSU classes with section numbers of 730-739 and 790-799 as online classes

  • Even if you are authorized for Reduced Course Load (RCL) or Dual Enrollment, you are still required to follow the online or distance learning class regulation.

  • If your course of study is in a language study program, you are not eligible for online or distance education classes.

  • Contact OISS if you have any questions or see an OISS advisor during walk-in hours from 1 to 3pm, Monday through Friday.

  • Last Semester: If you only need one course to complete your program of study in your last semester, your, and you are in the U.S., then that course cannot be online or distance learning.

Summer Semester

  • Summer is considered a vacation semester (no enrollment is required) only if you are enrolled full time or are completing your studies for the following Fall semester.
  • If you plan to complete your studies in Summer, then you must enroll full time or apply for last semester RCL.
  • Students starting a new program in Summer or returning for Summer semester after a break from studies at MSU must enroll full time.

It is your responsibility to comply with the full-time enrollment requirement and maintain your immigration status in the U.S.
