Which health insurance policies qualify for waiver?

The waiver criteria are strict. It is going to be difficult to find a health insurance policy that meets all of MSU's health insurance waiver criteria. If you simply run a Google search for international student insurance, you are unlikely to find a policy that will qualify for an insurance waiver.

OISS knows that MSU international students want choices for their health insurance coverage. Therefore, we negotiated with several health insurance companies to provide you with alternative health insurance plan which meets the insurance waiver criteria.

International Student Protection: Trail Blazer (

The above plan was designed by the International Student Protection company with guidance from MSU’s Office for International Students and Scholars. It contains features that are difficult to find in the private market, such as:

  • Maternity coverage
  • Prescription Drugs: High coverage, including oral contraceptive coverage
  • Coverage for injuries sustained:
    • while participating in sports like soccer and badminton
    • while skiing or snowboarding
    • while riding a motorcycle
    • while intoxicated
  • Coverage for sexually transmitted diseases
  • $2,000 individual out-of-pocket limit, which keeps your costs low in case of major illness or injury

If you still want to find your own health insurance plan, please make sure you show your insurance company the Insurance Waiver Criteria and verify that the policy meets the criteria before you purchase a new policy.
