Tax information
Did you earn income in the US during the calendar year 2012? If so, you are required to file income tax statements no later than April 15, 2013. You will soon receive (or may have already received) W-2 income statements from your employer to use during the tax filing process.
Filing taxes is not the same as paying taxes; you may even receive money back from the government when you file taxes. The tax forms simply describe your income and the tax you have already paid on that income. The goal is to determine if you have paid the correct amount of tax.
The MSU College of Law Tax Clinic will hold an interactive seminar for International Students and Scholars to assist you in preparing your federal and Michigan income tax returns using CINTAX, a web-based tax return preparation system. Each participant will be given an Access Code, at the course, to log on. At the end of the instructional course, participants will have prepared their own returns and they will be ready for filing.
These seminars will be held on Saturdays at the MSU ENGINEERING BLDG, Room 1345 on the following dates only:
NONRESIDENT sessions:
- February 9, 9:00am
- February 16, 9:00am
- February 16, 1:00pm
- March 16, 9:00am
- March 23, 9:00am
- March 23, 1:00pm
RESIDENT sessions:
- February 9, 1:00pm
- March 16, 1:00pm
Please check the MSU College of Law Tax Clinic website at http://www.law.msu.edu/clinics/tax/seminars (http://www.law.msu.edu/clinics/tax/seminars) for help in determining your tax filing status (i.e. whether you should attend a NONRESIDENT or RESIDENT session), detailed registration instructions, and a list of documents required to complete your 2012 tax filings.
DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS, THE TAX LAW CLINIC CANNOT ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS VIA EMAIL OR PHONE AT THIS TIME. CHECK THEIR WEBSITE BEGINNING February 1, 2013.
