How to use healthcare in the US

Having a baby in the United States

Do you know... the average cost of to deliver a baby in the United States ranges from $6,000 to over $10,000 USD! A C-section costs even more! Here are some useful tips to save you money:

Buy insurance with maternity coverage

Not all insurance policies cover maternity. If anyone in your family may become pregnant during your stay in the U.S., it's important to make sure the insurance you are purchasing will cover maternity costs.

Buy insurace before becoming pregnant

In general, pregnancy is viewed as a pre-existing condition if the conception occurs before the enrollment of a new plan. Typical waiting period before the insurance company starts to cover a pre-existing condition is 6 months and often longer.

Birth Center:

If you are having an uncomplicated pregnancy you may consider giving birth at a birthing center. The estimated cost of a delivery and prenatal care at a birthing center is about $3,000 - $4,000. It's about half of what it would be for a delivery at a hospital. However, it is NOT a hospital. If you have a complicated pregnancy, you will be sent to a hospital and be billed for that. Also, not all insurance plan covers birth center.

Please Note: Aetna Student Health Base Plan and Graduate Assistant Plan offer maternity coverage and to our knowledge, they are the only two plans without pre-existing condition limits.
