Beware of recent phone scams

Posted By: Meg Elizabeth Dedyne    Published: Friday, 24 Feb 2017

Did anyone call you and say you owe the U.S. government tax and ask money from you? That's a scam phone call, meaning someone pretends to be a government official and wants to steal your money. Check this official IRS web page on what to do if you receive suspicious IRS-related communication: https://www.irs.gov/uac/report-phishing.

There are a lot of scams going on right now targeting international students. Never give money over the phone and never agree to meet someoe who says they work for the U.S. government. Come to OISS for help and report the call to the MSU Police.

Also from the Lansing Board of Water & Light:

"We're monitoring a phone scam today from people claiming to be with the BWL and demanding money via pre-paid debit card, or they'll turn off service. The scam calls show up on caller I.D. from 866-289-2570.

Phone scammers are asking customers to acquire pre-paid debit cards, and return the call to make their payment to avoid service shut offs.

BWL customer service representatives will NEVER ask for payments through pre-paid debit cards, a wire service or for credit card information over the phone or in person. BWL customers have the option of "customer-initiated" credit card payments through a secure Intranet site or secure automated voice payment system.

BWL customer service representatives will also know the balance a customer owes and never need to ask the customer for it.

This scam has been reported to the Lansing Police Department (/https://www.facebook.com/lansingpolicedepartment/). If customers do fall victim, they are urged to contact local law enforcement."
