Orientation update #4: Health information

Posted By: OISS    Published: Monday, 09 Jul 2012

Dear Future MSU Spartan,

You may have a lot of questions about health care and health insurance in the U.S. The MSU Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) would like to help you answer some of the more commonly asked questions. Please read the information below. More detailed information can be found at http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/health/ (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/health/).

What is the immunization self-report?
MSU requires all entering undergraduate students to complete the Immunization Self-Report form, available online at immunize.msu.edu (http://immunize.msu.edu/). If you need assistance completing your Immunization Self-Report, bring your immunization documentation with you when you come to MSU, and someone will assist you. It is strongly advised that young adults entering college have all of the vaccines recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other national health officials prior to enrolling at MSU. A list of recommended immunizations, FAQs, and other information regarding student health and disease prevention can be found at: http://uphys.msu.edu (http://uphys.msu.edu/).

What is mandatory TB screening?
All international students are required to have a tuberculosis (TB) screening upon arrival. At check-in with the Office for International Students and Scholars, you will receive instructions on how and when to complete the TB testing requirement. The TB screening will be done by blood test and costs $40 and is automatically billed to your student account. If needed, we will assist you with the arrangements for any follow-up care, which may be covered by your insurance. This testing will not affect your visa status. If you have recently been screened for TB in your home country, you will still be required to have your blood drawn at MSU and will be billed $40. For more information about vaccinations, availability of vaccines, and health insurance, visit http://olin.msu.edu/insurance.html (http://olin.msu.edu/insurance.html). Questions about the immunization policy can be directed to the University Physician's office at: 517.353.8933 or uphys@msu.edu.

Where can I get health care if it is necessary?
MSU's Olin Health Center provides medical, dental and health education services for students during their enrollment at MSU. Olin Health Center is staffed with board-certified physicians and other certified health care professionals. Medical clinics include: Primary Care, Gynecology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry and Sports Medicine. Other services available at Olin include: pharmacy, laboratory, physical therapy, and radiology. Health Education services include: nutrition counseling; fitness testing; HIV/AIDS counseling, testing and education; outreach programming for student groups; and a variety of resources online at: www.olin.msu.edu (http://www.olin.msu.edu/). Additional services include the Pharmacy Delivery Service, and the 24 Hour Phone Information Nurse. Olin also provides a courtesy van that picks up and returns students who live in campus residence halls, University Apartments, or within one mile of the campus.

Do I need student health insurance? And where can I get it?
All international students are required to carry health insurance at MSU. All international students are automatically enrolled for the Aetna base plan based on their course registration. The cost of the insurance will be added to their MSU Student Account. Graduate Assistants and Teaching Assistants receive student health insurance at no cost. For more information on student health insurance, please visit http://www.hr.msu.edu/benefits/studenthealth/studentplan.htm (http://www.hr.msu.edu/benefits/studenthealth/studentplan.htm)

You also have an option to purchase a health insurance from the U.S. private market or from your home country as long as it will cover you in the U.S. and it meets all the MSU minimum health insurance requirements. You may request an 'insurance waiver' online, which is an exception from the mandatory Aetna Student Health policy. Bring an English version or English translation of your policy information. More information is available at: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/health/policy.htm (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/health/policy.htm)
