Posted By: OISS    Published: Monday, 21 May 2012

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced additions to the list of Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes that are DHS-approved for the 17-month extension. The CIP code is a program code that is assigned by the U.S. government for each degree major. You can find your CIP code on the top left corner of page 3 of your I-20. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) CIP codes, along with an E-Verify employer, are necessary to determine your eligibly to apply for the 17-month OPT extension.

More information regarding the 17-month OPT extension and E-Verify can be found: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/employ (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/employ). A updated list of the STEM CIP codes is available at: http://www.ice.gov/sevis/stemlist.htm (http://www.ice.gov/sevis/stemlist.htm).

Please contact OISS (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/about/location.htm) if you have any questions.
