Bone marrow drive at this Friday's Coffee Hour

Posted By: OISS    Published: Tuesday, 31 Jan 2012

Dear MSU Family,

An international student from Korea has been diagnosed with Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma and currently needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. In hopes of saving this student and thousands of others who are waiting for a donor, the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) is planning to host a Bone Marrow Drive this Friday, February 3, 2012 from 4-6pm, during Coffee Hour, outside of Spartan Rooms B & C in the Food Court.

Doctors will search the Be The Match Registry® in hopes of finding a suitable donor. Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially needed to register. On average, only one in 540 members on the registry will go on to donate. Donors never pay and can usually go home the same day. “Some donations involve surgery and some do not. The patient’s doctor requests either a marrow donation, a surgical procedure, or a peripheral blood stem cells (PBSC) donation, which is non-surgical. Donors experience no pain during marrow donation, as this procedure uses general or regional anesthesia.”

We ask that you please come to get a quick, painless cheek swab and sign up for the Be The Match Registry® to possibly save a life. If you are a match, you do not have to donate. If you later change your mind, you simply remove your name from the list.

Please come to the Food Court on Friday to register and recruit others that may be interested. People of Korean descent will have a greater chance of matching our Spartan student but we can all participate in hopes of helping others like him.

Thank you,
The OISS Staff
