Welcome to spring semester 2012!

Dear students and scholars,

On behalf of the staff of the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS), let me welcome you to spring semester 2012. MSU deeply values the presence of international students and scholars on campus and it is a privilege for our staff to assist you. Here are some reminders as we start the year:

1) A calendar of events for international students is on the OISS website: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/events. OPT workshops will soon be scheduled for F-1 students graduating this semester.

2) Please join us every Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm for the weekly Coffee Hour. It takes place in the Spartan Rooms B and C of the International Center and is a great place to make friends, be involved and start the weekend, and the coffee is free! The first Coffee Hour of this semester kicks off next Friday (01/13/2012).

3) F-1 students: When registering for classes, please note that U.S. Immigration Regulations allow only ONE online class per semester that can be used toward the minimum number of credits needed for full-time enrollment as an F-1 student. Please make sure that you are in compliance with these regulations. Failure to comply will affect and possibly end your immigration status. More information is available at: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/status/online.htm. Please contact OISS if you have any questions.

4) The extended deadline for submitting your application for the Homer Higbee International Education Award is Friday, January 20, 2012. Recipients will receive a cash award. For more information, please visit: http://www.isp.msu.edu/awards/iac/forms/higbee.pdf*.

5) We recommend you regularly check your MSU email and periodically check the OISS website. OISS will be keeping you informed of important information about immigration and other issues. We do not want any MSU international student to miss any critical new information.

OISS invites you to contact us at any time we might be of assistance to you.

Best wishes for a successful semester.

Peter Briggs, OISS Director
