Maintaining your immigration status: The full time enrollment requirement

Posted By: OISS    Published: Thursday, 23 Jun 2011

All students who are on F and J visas must be registered full-time every Fall and Spring semester. What is full-time at MSU? See here: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students_status_FT.php (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students_status_FT.php)

To be less than full-time, you need to receive reduced course load approval. To learn more about this procedure: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students_status_FT.php (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students_status_FT.php)

Please note that the summer semester is considered a vacation semester (no enrollment is required) only if it is your intention to enroll full-time for the following Fall semester. If you plan to complete your studies in Summer, then you must be enrolled full-time or apply for last semester reduced course load.

You should also be aware of the restrictions for online courses: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/status/online.htm (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/students/status/online.htm)

Lastly, MSU does allow students to dual enroll at another institution with proper documentation: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/documents/students/dual_enroll.pdf* (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/documents/students/dual_enroll.pdf)

Please make sure that you are in compliance with the full-time enrollment requirements. Failure to follow these regulations will affect and possibly end your immigration status.
Contact OISS if you have any questions or see an advisor during walk-in hours from 1-3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
