Exchange Visa Internship 

The Exchange Visa Intern will provide clerical and project assistance to the regulatory side of the MSU J-1 Visa Program, which is one of the top 20 largest academic J-1 programs in the US.

Responsibilities

  • Package and distribute immigration documents to departments across campus.
  • Create, maintain, and send initial email communication to departments and scholars on J-1 Scholar arrival and departure lists.
  • Intake and triage of DS-2019 requests, as well as fulfillment of record keeping procedures post-completion of DS-2019 request.
  • Answer program email account.
  • Basic OISS/Info database J-1 Scholar updates.
  • Reception Duties: answer telephone, greet students and scholars upon arrival, triage appointments during walk-in advising hours, etc.
  • Other reception, clerical, and office duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate student status preferred, talented undergraduates will be considered.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Experience working with diverse and/or international population preferred.
  • Interest in government policy & regulation preferred.
  • Interest in the profession of international educational exchange preferred.

Learning Outcomes

  • A close look at the profession of international student and scholar services.
  • Training in U.S. immigration regulations pertaining to international students, scholars, and family members holding J-1 and J-2 visas.
  • Experience working with a wide variety of J visa program stakeholders across MSU's large and diverse campus.
