How to insure your family while at MSU

Family Health Insurance Award Program

The Family Health Insurance Award Program (FHIAP) offers international students the funding needed to purchase health insurance for their dependent family member(s) who need coverage.

The MSU Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) is pleased to announce that we have funding to continue the International Family Health Insurance Award Program (FHIAP) for Spring 2016. If selected, this award can help pay for up to 6 months of health insurance coverage for one or more immediate family members. Coverage will be effective 2/15/2016 to 8/14/2016.

Before you apply:

  1. Please check the NEW Aetna prices for the 2015-2016 academic year. Visit and click on either "Base Plan Students" if you don't have an assistantship or "Graduate Assistants" if you do have an assistantship. There has been a substantial decreasein the cost of family health insurance for both the Graduate Assistant Plan and the Base Plan for students without assistantships. If the new prices are now affordable for you, please do NOT apply – our funds are limited and we want them to go to the families with the highest degree of need.
  2. Note that we do not offer this award for dependents that hold US citizenship because US citizens are eligible to apply for Medicaid, which is health insurance provided by the US government for citizens who cannot otherwise afford health insurance. Application Deadline: February 3, 2016!
