Welcome back! A message from the OISS director

Posted By: OISS    Published: Monday, 07 Jan 2013

Dear international students and scholars,

On behalf of the staff of the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS), let me welcome you to spring semester 2013. MSU deeply values the presence of international students and scholars on campus and it is a privilege for our staff to assist you. Here are some reminders as we start the year:

  • A calendar of events for international students and scholars is on the OISS website: Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshops will soon be scheduled for F-1 students graduating this semester. More information on OPT is available at: (
  • Please join us every Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm for the weekly Coffee Hour. It takes place in the Spartan Rooms B and C of the International Center and is a great place to make friends, be involved and start the weekend... and the coffee is free! The first Coffee Hour of this semester kicks off next Friday, January 11th.
  • All students with financial needs in the spring and summer 2013 semesters are invited to apply for tuition support through the OISS Emergency Tuition Award program. Application deadline for the spring semester is 01/15/2013 and summer semester is 05/15/2013. For more information, please see: (
  • Students are required to enroll in classes and maintain a full course of study in spring and fall semesters. Failure to comply will affect and possibly end your immigration status. You can find a summary of some of your main responsibilities as an F-1 or J-1 student at ( Please contact OISS if you have any questions.
  • F-1 students: When registering for classes, please note that U.S. Immigration Regulations allow only ONE online class per semester that can be used toward the minimum number of credits needed for full-time enrollment as an F-1 student. Please make sure that you are in compliance with these regulations. More information is available at: (
  • It is mandatory for all international students to maintain a current U.S. address. You must have a current U.S. residential address on file with MSU at all times. For instructions on how to report your U.S. address to OISS, please see: (
  • The deadline for submitting your application for the Homer Higbee International Education Award is Friday, January 25, 2013. Recipients will receive a cash award. For more information, please see:
  • We recommend that you regularly check your MSU email and periodically check the OISS website so you do not miss any critical new information. OISS will be keeping you informed of important information about immigration status and other issues.

OISS invites you to contact us at any time we might be of assistance to you.

Best wishes for a successful semester.

Peter Briggs, Director
