End of year reminders from the OISS director

Posted By: OISS    Published: Friday, 07 Dec 2012

Dear international students:

Please accept best wishes from the staff of the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) as the fall semester soon comes to a close. We wish safe travels to all who journey to far off places over the coming holiday break.

  • If you are leaving the U.S. for the break and will be returning as an F-1 student or on F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT), please remember to get a travel signature from our office. We recommend that signatures are no older than 6 months upon your re-entry. Please click here for more information on travel:
  • If you are graduating and have not yet applied for OPT, please note that your OPT application needs to be received by immigration within 60 days of your completion date. More information about OPT can be found at:
  • F-1 students: When registering for classes, please note that U.S. Immigration Regulations allow only ONE online class per semester that can be used toward the minimum number of credits needed for full-time enrollment as an F-1 student. Please make sure that you are in compliance with these regulations. Failure to comply will affect and possibly end your immigration status. More information is available at: Please contact OISS if you have any questions.
  • Attention graduating students: If you earned any amount of money through employment in the 2012 calendar year, you are still required to file tax return forms with state and federal governments no later than April 15, 2013, even if you return to your home country. The MSU College of Law Tax Clinic can help you file your tax forms from outside the US and their services are FREE. Avoid future legal troubles: failure to file tax returns can impact you even after many years have passed. Send an email to as soon as possible to make arrangements for filing your tax forms.
  • Let me also congratulate the winners of the 2012 annual International Student Essay Contest. You can read their essays at: We are grateful to all students who took the time to write their stories.
    • 1st Prize ($1,000): Jihyun Paik from South Korea
    • 2nd Prize ($500): Wenda Nofera from Indonesia
    • 3rd Prize ($250): Sandra Sawaya from Lebanon
  • Submit your application for the Homer Higbee International Education Award! This award recognizes MSU students who have made significant contributions to the support of international awareness through involvement in programs that promote cross-cultural understanding on campus and in the community. Recipients will receive a cash award. For more information, please visit:*.

Best wishes for the holiday season.
