A welcome message from the OISS Director

Posted By: OISS    Published: Wednesday, 29 Aug 2012

On behalf of the staff from the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS), let me welcome you to fall semester 2012. Michigan State University (MSU) deeply values the presence of international students and scholars on campus and it is a privilege for our staff to assist you. Here are some reminders as we start the year:

  • We recommend that you regularly check your MSU email and periodically check the OISS web site. OISS will be keeping you informed of important information about immigration and other issues. We do not want any MSU international student to miss any critical new information.

  • A calendar of events (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/events) for international students and scholars is available on the OISS website. You can also follow us on social media (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/socialmedia) for immediate updates on immigration news and programming events at. Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshops have been scheduled for F-1 students graduating this semester.

  • International students on F-1 or J-1 visas are required to maintain full-time enrollment during the school year. For students who are unable to meet the full-time enrollment requirement, a Reduced Course Load (RCL) (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/news/?id=555) authorization option may be available. These options are limited and require approval in advance.

  • F-1 students: U.S. Immigration Regulations require that only ONE online class per semester can be used to count toward the minimum number of credits needed for full-time enrollment as an F-1 student. If you only need one course to complete your program of study, the course cannot be online or distance learning. If your course of study is in a language study program then online or distance education will not count towards your full-time enrollment status. Please make sure that you are in compliance with the full-time requirement. Failure to follow these regulations will affect and possibly end your immigration status. Please contact OISS if you have any questions or come in to see an advisor during walk-in hours from 1pm to 3pm, Monday through Friday.

  • Are you planning a trip outside of the U.S.? Please contact OISS to make sure that all your documents are in order and have the necessary signatures before you travel. Read more (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/news/?id=534)about travel and re-entry.

  • For the 10th year, OISS is sponsoring an essay contest (http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/feature/essay) about your experience as an international student at MSU and in the U.S. Everyone has interesting stories and you can win $1,000!

  • Please join us every Friday from 4 to 6pm for the weekly Coffee Hour. It takes place in the Spartan Rooms B and C of the International Center and is a great place to make friends, be involved and start the weekend... and the coffee is free! The first Coffee Hour for this semester will kick off on Friday, Sept 07. Join us for free food, beverages, music and fun.

  • OISS, like other offices on campus, will close at 3pm on Friday 08/31 due to campus preparations for the first evening football game of the year. Our office hours will resume as normal at 8am on Tuesday 09/04, after the Labor Day week-end.

OISS invites you to contact us at any time we might be of assistance to you.

Best wishes for a successful semester.
