Time: 9:00 am – 11:30am and 1:00pm - 3:00 pm

Students who wish to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) may complete the application process at a convenient on-campus location on September 9th. (See session schedule below).

PLEASE NOTE not everyone is eligible to apply for a SSN. Keep reading for more info.

Question: If I am not employed, can I get a SSN?

Answer: Only international students and scholars who are employed in the US are required to apply for a SSN.

Question: If I am not employed, can I get a SSN?

Answer: It depends on your visa status, F-1 students must have an employment offer in order to apply for a SSN. So, if you are an F-1 student and you do NOT have a job offer, you are NOT eligible for a SSN. F-2 family members are NOT eligible for a SSN. All J-1 students and scholars ARE eligible for a SSN, regardless of employment status. J-2 family members are only eligible for a SSN if they have US work authorization.

Question: Do I need a SSN for daily life in the US?

Answer: If you are not employed, then no, you do not need it. You can get a bank account, driver's license, apartment lease, everything you need, all without a SSN. A mobile phone contact may be more expensive without a SSN, but you can still have a pay-as-you-go mobile phone.

Question: What documents are required to apply for a SSN?

Answer: Please view documentation requirements listed at the bottom of page 1 here: http://oiss.isp.msu.edu/documents/students/SSNhandout.pdf*

DONT FORGET TO BRING PHOTOCOPIES OF ALL REQUIRED DOCUMENTS TO THE ON-CAMPUS APPLICATION SESSION.

If you are not eligible for a SSN but wish to apply for either a Michigan Driver's License or Michigan Identification Card, you are also welcome to come to the application session and request a "letter of ineligibility," which can be used toward your driver's license or identification card application.
