Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Date: Monday, 20 Jan 2014 Time: All Day Event Location: Campus Wide

In 1986, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a U.S. federal holiday and in 1998, Michigan State University's administration officially canceled the regular class schedule on the national holiday.

While classes are canceled, MSU has continued to ensure that the day is filled with opportunities  for students, faculty, and staff to "develop an understanding of the fundamental principles  of equity and respect for the dignity of all that are the core of the King legacy" (MSU Trustee Policy Committee memorandum, Feb. 11, 1998, available here (PDF)*).

From documentary film screenings to a jazz performance, lectures, gallery showings, a student leadership conference, community service activities, and commemorative  march - the day has something for everyone.

This is a wonderful opportunity for international students and scholars to learn more about this important figure in American history while at the same time fostering moments to consider universal human rights.

The full schedule is available here (PDF)*.
